Demand for natural gas is so high, in fact, that Minnesota natural gas utilities reward their customers that use another source of energy during peak demand times with guaranteed reduced rates. How standby propane works

Propane standby systems deliver a propane-air blend with burning characteristics comparable to natural gas. Liquid propane vaporizes easily, and when blended with air, can replace natural gas in any natural gas application, including boilers, process ovens, ventilation equipment and more.

Unlike fuel oil, propane-air is so similar to natural gas that the switch from natural gas to propane can happen while the equipment is in use.
